10 tips to ace an Amazon interview with bar raisers

by Bill Carr September 26, 2025

I spent 15 years at Amazon, 10 as a Vice President. I conducted ~5 interviews/week for positions ranging from interns to SVPs. Here are my 10 tips for how to ace an interview at Amazon:

First, it is important to understand how Amazon interviews differ from other companies.

In most companies, interviewers can use their discretion to ask whatever questions they think are important. In Amazon’s “Bar Raiser” Hiring Process, interviewers are assigned specific and objective data to gather, focusing on the Amazon Leadership Principles.

Here are the tips:

1. Master the Leadership Principles

The 16 LPs drive every Amazon decision, including hiring. Prepare by understanding them deeply and thinking of work examples for each.

2. Prepare Examples in Advance

Behavioral interviews focus on past experiences. Write detailed, structured answers for all LPs before the interview—it’s an “open-note” test.

3. Use the S.T.A.R. Method

Structure answers using “Situation, Task, Action, Result.” Highlight your role in what happened, the actions taken, and the measurable impacts. Strong answers show leadership, problem-solving, and ownership.

4. Keep It Concise

Avoid rambling. Deliver clear, 1-2 minute answers with a beginning, middle, and end. If interviewers need more details, they will ask.

5. Structure Your Responses

Use lists to break down actions where possible.

EX: “I identified 4 key steps: 1) Align with the team, 2) Write a requirements doc, etc.”

This enhances clarity.

6. Research Amazon

Study Amazon’s history, business model, and challenges. Use the company’s products, read industry news, and connect with employees to understand its culture.

7. Ask Thoughtful Questions

Show genuine interest and avoid generic questions. Ask about the team’s challenges, leadership expectations, or career growth.

Also, ask clarifying questions about interview questions or tasks. Do not guess about what the interviewer is looking for.

Never ask if you “did well” in the interview.

8. Understand the Bar Raiser’s Role

Bar Raisers are interview experts who lead the debrief of your candidacy. They come from other teams and exist to help the hiring manager make the best decision. Their interview isn’t “harder” or more important than the others.

9. Write Clearly if Asked for a Sample

If you are asked for a writing sample, prioritize clarity of thought, conciseness, and logic. Use data-driven arguments and add an FAQ to demonstrate structured thinking and an understanding of potential questions.

10. Follow Up Smartly

A thank-you note is optional but can reinforce interest. If you missed a key point in the interview, follow up with a thoughtful email clarifying your response.

By preparing effectively and demonstrating Amazon’s values, you’ll significantly improve your chances of landing the job.
